Recipe: SAUSAGE, APPLE, CELERY STUFFING
Ingredients
- 1 cup minced onion
- 1 ½ cups chopped celery (stalks and leaves)
- 2 large peeled, cored, and diced apples (your favorite variety)
- 1 cup butter
- 1 pound bulk pork sausage (I use Jimmy Dean Sage Pork Sausage)
- 28 ounces chicken broth (I use Swanson)
- 9 cups soft bread cubes or 1 package seasoned stuffing cubes
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- Crushed dried sage and thyme to taste
- 1 cup dried cranberries, (optional)
Instructions
- In a large skillet melt butter. Add onion, celery, apples and sausage.
- Cook until vegetables are tender and sausage browned.
- Stir in about ½ of cubed bread or seasoned stuffing mix and combine all the ingredients together.
- Add the pepper, sage, and thyme.
- Put into a deep bowl.
- Pour in chicken broth. Add remaining bread or stuffing cubes and toss.
- I like moist stuffing. If you find the stuffing on the dry side you may add additional chicken broth or apple cider.
- If stuffing the turkey fill the cavity just before roasting.
- The stuffing may also be baked uncovered in a buttered casserole dish.
